Human Anatomy and Physiology I with Dr. Sharon Simpson - BSC2085

This class meets totally online with no on-campus meetings. However, you will need to go to either the e-Testing Center at Central Campus or e-Testing Center at North Campus to take each of the four mandatory exams as scheduled, during e-Testing Center hours of operation.

Faculty Introduction

Before coming to Broward College, I taught Medical School Gross Anatomy and Histology classes at Osteopathic Medical Schools in Ohio and Florida. For over 20 years, I have taught Anatomy and Physiology lectures and labs at the Central Campus. About 10 years ago, I volunteered to create the first fully online Anatomy and Physiology class at Broward College. As a result, I am comfortable helping you with the challenges in this course and will be giving you the background you need to succeed in your future allied health careers.

Course Description

In this course, you will master a great many biological concepts and learn the anatomy and physiology of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, and special sensory systems. To do this in an online format, I have set up many types of learning materials for you. You will be able to communicate with me and your classmates in emails and discussion postings. To complete the course you will engage in class discussions, complete small assignments and miniquizzes and take proctored online exams on special computers in the library. If you would like to read Broward College's complete course description for this course, go to BSC2085 Course Outline.

Methods of Instruction

This is a 3-credit hour course. Normally, a 3-credit hour course would meet two or three times each week for a total of 48 hours per term. However, In this class, you will take four on campus exams and will be engaged in online activities for the remainder of the class time. These activities include small assignments to help you master the most challenging concepts, Miniquizzes designed to help you review and prepare for the exams and thought provoking class discussions. The course makes it possible for you to use the powerpoints that I created for you as your study notes and, also, organizes some very useful material provided by the textbook publisher.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of basic chemical concepts, body organization, the structure and function of human cells, tissues, membranes, glands, the integumentary system, the skeletal system, the muscular system, the nervous system, and the special senses.

Course Requirements

There are no prerequisites for this course although it would be very helpful to have taken Chemistry for the Allied Health Student (Chem 1032) and a computer class such as CGS1100. Human Anatomy and Physiology I laboratory (BSC2085L) is a corequisite for this course. The laboratory activities will reinforce your understanding of the major concepts of the lecture material. The laboratory (BSC2085L) is NOT an online class and consists of on campus 2 hour labs.

Course Materials and How to Register for this Course

The required textbook is Anatomy and Physiology: The Unity of Form and Function by Kenneth Saladin (6th edition). It can be purchased at all of the college bookstores as a paperback or as a hardcover version that will include what you need for Anatomy II as well. It is also being sold by the publisher as an ebook that you can use on an IPad or on your desk computer. In the Central campus bookstore, it is bundled with 2 free coupon codes for websites that contain material useful to you in both the lecture and the co-requisite Anatomy and Physiology Lab course. Printed powerpoints created by Dr. Sharon Simpson are also available in the Central Campus bookstore. The powerpoints are included in the course, but they are flash files and can not be printed. An optional but highly recommended CD-ROM entitled Interactive Physiology - 10 System Suite Student Version by Benjamin Cummings (ISBN 9780805361186 published 2008) can be purchased online from Barnes and Noble for about $12.
You may enroll in this course by going through myBC website . Due to the design of the course, once the course is full, I can not add additional students. However, near the end of the registration period for the upcoming Term, the registrar purges students that have not paid their tuition fees creating some openings. Students must pay for the course before they will be able to log into the course.
